History & Legacy
The Marriott Center opened on December 3, 1971, with the Time Zone Tournament. Named for businessman J. Willard Marriott, it was the largest arena of its kind in the United States at opening. The facility replaced the George Albert Smith Fieldhouse. Its roof covers 130,000 square feet and encloses 8 million cubic feet. The Marriott Center has hosted NCAA Tournament games and remains one of college basketball's most intimidating road venues.
