Prudential Center anchors downtown Newark as the home of the New Jersey Devils and Seton Hall Pirates men's basketball. Locally known as "The Rock," it gives northern New Jersey a modern arena of its own, separate from the New York market across the river. The building draws a loyal, close-knit hockey crowd and a rowdy college-basketball following for Seton Hall games. It's also one of the region's busiest stops for major touring concerts and boxing cards.
It opened on October 25, 2007 with a run of Bon Jovi concerts, and the Devils played their first game there two days later. Seton Hall hosted its first game at the arena in November 2007, an overtime win over Monmouth, establishing the Pirates as the building's college-basketball tenant. "The Rock" has since become a fixture for major boxing cards and touring concerts alongside its two primary tenants. It remains the anchor of Newark's ongoing downtown revitalization.
