The Pit
LobosOverview
The Pit, officially University Arena, is the legendary home of New Mexico Lobos basketball and one of college basketball's most intimidating venues. The playing floor sits 37 feet below street level, creating a cauldron-like atmosphere with exceptional acoustics. Located in Albuquerque, the arena has been the site of countless upsets and memorable moments. Its unique design eliminates interior columns for unobstructed views.
History & Legacy
The Pit opened on December 1, 1966, and quickly earned its nickname due to its distinctive subterranean design. Architect Joe Boehning's innovative design cost only $1.4 million to build. The arena underwent renovations that increased capacity to over 15,000. The Pit has hosted NCAA Tournament games and was the site of the 1983 NCAA Final, where NC State's Lorenzo Charles dunk shocked Houston. It replaced Johnson Gymnasium and has been the heart of Lobo basketball for nearly 60 years.
