Acrisure Stadium sits at the confluence of Pittsburgh's three rivers, an open-air bowl shared by the Steelers and the University of Pittsburgh Panthers with the city's skyline as a backdrop. The 68,400-seat stadium's steel-heavy construction is a deliberate nod to Pittsburgh's Steel City identity, and its riverside plaza fills with tailgaters for hours before kickoff. Sightlines are notably steep and close to the field, amplifying crowd noise on third downs. On Sundays the stands turn into a rolling sea of black and gold, punctuated by thousands of twirling gold Terrible Towels.
The stadium opened on October 7, 2001 (as Heinz Field), replacing Three Rivers Stadium, with the Steelers beating the Bengals 16-7 in its debut. It has since hosted two of the Steelers' Super Bowl-run home playoff games during their XL and XLIII championship seasons, part of the franchise's record six Lombardi Trophies. Beyond football, the stadium has staged the 2011 NHL Winter Classic and 2017 NHL Stadium Series, plus a record-breaking 2023 Taylor Swift show. Renamed Acrisure Stadium in 2022, it remains anchored by the Terrible Towel tradition born under Myron Cope decades earlier.
