Moby Arena

Moby Arena is the home of Colorado State Rams men's and women's basketball in Fort Collins, Colorado, seating just over 8,000. It also hosts Rams volleyball, and its hump-shaped, rounded roof has made it one of the most visually distinctive gyms in the Mountain West. The compact bowl puts fans close to the floor, giving Rams basketball a loud, old-school college gym atmosphere in an era of larger modern arenas.

Officially the Colorado State Auditorium-Gymnasium, it opened January 24, 1966, with a win over New Mexico State, replacing the 1,500-seat South College Gymnasium. Its rounded roof reminded a student newspaper writer of a beached whale, and the nickname 'Moby Gymnasium' stuck for Melville's white whale; athletic director Oval Jaynes formalized it as Moby Arena in the late 1980s. Nearly 60 years later, it remains one of the Mountain West's most distinctive and enduring venues.
