Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is an on-campus arena at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, home to UConn Huskies men's and women's basketball. The building's distinctive sloped roofline and steep sightlines give it a cauldron-like feel that visiting teams dread. It complements the program's off-campus home at the XL Center in Hartford, hosting the bulk of the regular-season slate on campus. On big nights the student section presses right up against the baseline, and the noise builds from tip-off in a way few college gyms in the Northeast can match.
Opened January 21, 1990 with an original capacity of 8,241, Gampel was expanded in 1996 with additional seating above each entrance quadrant. It is named for industrialist and UConn graduate Harry A. Gampel, who donated $1 million toward construction. Since it opened, Gampel has been a fortress for the UConn men's and women's dynasties, which have combined to win 13 national championships (9 women's, 4 men's) in the building's era. Its intimate, deafening atmosphere makes it one of the toughest home courts in the country.
