Carver-Hawkeye Arena is the home of University of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball and wrestling in Iowa City, one of the sport's toughest environments to play in. The multi-purpose arena seats around 15,000-15,400 fans in a distinctive sunken bowl. Named for booster Roy J. Carver, it hosts both men's and women's basketball as well as nationally elite wrestling and gymnastics programs. On big nights the building's steep sightlines and close-in seating make for a deafening, electric atmosphere.
Opened in 1983, the arena is partially built below ground level, giving it its trademark sunken bowl design. It set an NCAA women's basketball attendance record on February 3, 1985, when 22,157 fans packed the arena for an Iowa-Ohio State rivalry game. Carver-Hawkeye has twice hosted U.S. Olympic wrestling trials (1984 and 2012) and is a regular site for Big Ten and NCAA wrestling championships, cementing its status as a marquee wrestling venue alongside its role as a Big Ten basketball fortress.
