The Mercyhurst Lakers take their name from the shores of nearby Lake Erie, just miles from campus in Erie, Pennsylvania. Having completed a rapid rise from Division II to Division I, the Lakers now compete in the Northeast Conference and play home games at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The program is known for a disciplined, defense-first identity built during its Division II heyday.
Mercyhurst University was founded in 1926 as a private Catholic liberal arts college. The Lakers made seven NCAA Division II tournament appearances between 2015 and 2023, including regional semifinal runs in 2016 and 2022. In 2024, Mercyhurst completed its reclassification to Division I and joined the Northeast Conference, opening a new chapter for the program.
