UC Santa Barbara Gauchos

The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos play their home games in the aptly named Thunderdome, one of college basketball's louder and more colorful mid-major arenas. UCSB basketball has produced periodic NCAA Tournament appearances and the occasional statement win over a ranked opponent, giving the program a scrappy reputation within the Big West. The Gauchos' best-known era came under coach Jerry Pimm in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the program first drew serious national attention. Santa Barbara basketball blends beach-town atmosphere with a genuine competitive edge.

UC Santa Barbara has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2023, with its signature moment coming in 1990 when the Gauchos upset top-ranked UNLV 77-70 during a breakout season under coach Jerry Pimm. The program has never advanced past the tournament's early rounds, but that Pimm-era run in the late 1980s and early 1990s remains the high point of Gauchos basketball history. UCSB has continued to make sporadic tournament trips as a Big West contender in the decades since. The Thunderdome's reputation as a tough road environment has been central to the program's identity.
