The CSUN Matadors bring Big West basketball to the San Fernando Valley, playing home games on campus in Northridge. Known for gritty, underdog runs against the conference's bigger programs, the Matadors have carved out two memorable NCAA Tournament trips in program history. Their fan base prizes the program's blue-collar identity and its knack for peaking in March.
The program dates back to the school's 1958 founding as San Fernando Valley State College, which became Cal State Northridge in 1972. CSUN built a strong Division II identity before jumping to Division I, and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2000-01 (as Big Sky champions) and again in 2008-09 after winning the Big West tournament. The Matadors joined the Big West in 2001 after leaving the Big Sky Conference.
