The Marshall Thundering Herd represent Marshall University out of Huntington, West Virginia, playing their home games at the Cam Henderson Center. Marshall has long been one of the scrappier mid-major programs in the sport, known for up-tempo, high-scoring basketball and a loyal Huntington fan base. After stops in Conference USA and the Sun Belt over the years, the Herd compete today in the Sun Belt Conference, chasing March Madness bids as a mid-major that punches above its weight.
Marshall fielded its first basketball team in 1906-07 and built one of its signature moments in 1967, reaching the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden. The program has made half a dozen NCAA Division I tournament trips, most recently in 2018, and won the NAIA national championship in 1947 in an earlier chapter of program history. Marshall has produced a run of prolific scorers over the decades and remains a fixture of West Virginia college basketball, with the Cam Henderson Center named for the coach who guided both the football and basketball programs.
