The Old Dominion Monarchs bring big-arena energy to Norfolk, Virginia, playing home games at Chartway Arena in front of one of the more passionate crowds in the Sun Belt Conference. ODU has bounced between Conference USA and the Sun Belt over the years, but its identity as a physical, defense-first program has stayed constant. The Monarchs carry a legitimate national-championship pedigree from their Division II days into their current Division I era.
Old Dominion basketball traces back to 1930 as the Norfolk Division of William & Mary, becoming independent when Old Dominion University was chartered in 1962. The Monarchs won the NCAA Division II national championship in 1975 under coach Sonny Allen before moving up to Division I in 1976-77. Since then, ODU has reached 12 NCAA Division I tournaments, highlighted by the 2018-19 season when the Monarchs swept the Conference USA regular-season and tournament titles for their first tournament bid since 2011.
