The North Texas Mean Green play their home games at the UNT Coliseum in Denton, part of a program with roots stretching back over a century. Now a member of the American Athletic Conference, North Texas has built its identity in recent years around gritty, defense-oriented basketball that punches above its seed line in March. The Mean Green have quietly become one of the more respected mid-major programs in the state of Texas.
North Texas basketball dates to 1916 and has made four NCAA tournament appearances, in 1988, 2007, 2010, and 2021. The program's breakout moment came in 2021, when the Mean Green stunned No. 4 seed Purdue 78-69 in overtime for the first NCAA tournament win in school history. North Texas also enjoyed a strong stretch from 2006-2010 under coach Johnny Jones, racking up more wins than any other Division I program in Texas during that span.
