History & Legacy
UNC Charlotte fielded its first basketball team in 1965, and in just its first NCAA tournament appearance in 1977, coach Lee Rose's 49ers upset Michigan to reach the Final Four — still the deepest tournament run by any first-time participant. Charlotte finished that season 28-5, a school record, before falling to eventual champion Marquette in the national semifinal. The 49ers have remained a competitive mid-major since, moving through Conference USA before joining the American Athletic Conference.
