The Green Bay Phoenix play their home games at the Resch Center just outside Green Bay, sharing the arena's energy with the city's pro football obsession. Green Bay has long punched above its weight in the Horizon League, built on a tradition of tenacious, discipline-first basketball. The program has sent notable talent to the college and pro ranks and remains a consistent threat come conference tournament time. For a small-market program, the Phoenix have carved out an outsized basketball identity in Wisconsin.
Green Bay basketball began in 1969-70 at the NAIA level, moved to Division II in 1973, and stepped up to Division I in 1982, joining the Horizon League in 1994. The program's defining era came under coach Dick Bennett from 1985 to 1995, whose defense-oriented system won conference titles and produced multiple NCAA Tournament berths. The Phoenix have made five NCAA Tournament appearances in program history, most recently in 2016. Alumni including Tony Bennett and Keifer Sykes have carried the program's reputation into coaching and professional basketball.
