The Saint Peter's Peacocks are the men's basketball program of Saint Peter's University in Jersey City, New Jersey, playing home games at the Yanitelli Center. Long a scrappy MAAC contender, the Peacocks became a household name across America in March 2022 with the most improbable NCAA Tournament run in modern history. Saint Peter's plays gritty, defense-first basketball that punches well above the resources of its small Jesuit university, and the program now carries a Cinderella legacy few mid-majors can match.
Saint Peter's University was founded in 1872, and its basketball program has won five MAAC Tournament championships (1991, 1995, 2011, 2022, 2024). The Peacocks etched their name into March Madness lore in 2022 as a No. 15 seed, upsetting Kentucky in overtime, Murray State, and Purdue to become the first 15-seed ever to reach the Elite Eight before falling to eventual runner-up North Carolina. That Cinderella run, orchestrated by coach Shaheen Holloway, remains the defining moment in program history.
