Saint Francis University's Red Flash play a small-school brand of basketball out of Loretto, a tiny rural campus in the Pennsylvania mountains, competing in the Northeast Conference at DeGol Arena. As one of the smallest Division I programs in the country, the Red Flash rely on tight-knit team chemistry and a devoted local following rather than big-name recruiting. The program has occasionally broken through with an NCAA Tournament bid as the NEC's automatic qualifier. It's classic small-college basketball, played with an outsized heart.
Saint Francis University, founded in 1847, has tracked basketball records back to the 1953-54 season and has reached the NCAA Tournament twice, most recently in 2025. The Red Flash have long competed as one of the sport's smaller Division I programs. In 2025 the university announced it would reclassify to NCAA Division III after the 2025-26 season, closing the book on its Division I era.
