The University of South Carolina was founded in 1801 as South Carolina College. The Gamecocks men's program went 44 years, from 1973 to 2017, without winning an NCAA tournament game before Frank Martin's 2017 squad broke through in stunning fashion, upsetting Marquette, Duke, Baylor, and fellow SEC member Florida to reach the program's first Final Four, where it fell to Gonzaga. That run remains the high-water mark of South Carolina men's basketball, which has never won a national championship.
