UNCG Spartans

The UNCG Spartans bring blue-collar energy to the Southern Conference, playing home games in the historic Greensboro Coliseum in the heart of North Carolina's Piedmont Triad. Since the program's formal launch in 1967, UNCG has built a reputation as a scrappy mid-major capable of knocking off bigger names, powered by tough guard play and a loud home crowd. The Spartans' green and gold have become a fixture of March in the Triad, with the program's biggest nights coming when a SoCon tournament title punches a ticket to the NCAA Tournament. It's a program built on hustle over hype.

UNC Greensboro fielded its first modern men's basketball team in 1967 and joined NCAA Division I play in the 1970s before settling into the Southern Conference. The Spartans broke through with their first NCAA Tournament berth in 1996 after winning the Big South title, then added SoCon tournament championships in 2001 and 2018 to reach the Big Dance again. Coaches Fran McCaffery and Wes Miller helped raise the program's profile in the 2000s and 2010s, cementing UNCG as one of the conference's steadier contenders.
