Overview
Tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains of Cullowhee, the Western Carolina Catamounts play with the underdog spirit of a small mountain school taking on the Southern Conference's best. The Ramsey Center gives the Catamounts a true home-court edge, and the program has a long memory for its lone brush with March Madness glory. Basketball has been part of campus life since the late 1920s, giving Western Carolina one of the SoCon's longer, if quieter, traditions. It's a program that prides itself on punching above its weight in a rugged league.
History & Legacy
Western Carolina's basketball history dates to the 1928-29 season, with early decades of success under coach Jim Gudger including North State and Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and a run to the 1963 NAIA championship game. After joining Division I and the Southern Conference, the program's signature moment came in 1995-96, when the Catamounts won the SoCon regular season and tournament titles to reach the program's first and only NCAA Tournament, nearly upsetting top-seeded Purdue as a 16-seed.
