The Jackson State Tigers bring HBCU basketball tradition to Mississippi's capital, playing home games at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center. Jackson State has long been a fixture near the top of the SWAC, blending steady regular-season contention with a knack for big tournament runs when it matters most. The program's recent stretch of conference titles has re-established it as one of the league's top forces. For SWAC basketball, Jackson State is as consistent a name as there is.

Jackson State, founded in 1877, became the first team to win the SWAC Tournament back in 1978, launching a program with seven regular-season and four tournament championships to its name. The Tigers have reached the NCAA Tournament five times — 1978, 1991, 1997, 2000, and 2007 — and remain a fixture in the modern SWAC title picture, capturing the crown again as recently as 2024. That blend of historic firsts and continued relevance defines the Jackson State program. Few SWAC schools can claim the same sustained presence at the top of the league.
