The Omaha Mavericks are the men's basketball program of the University of Nebraska Omaha, playing their home games at Baxter Arena on the school's Aksarben Village campus. As the lone Division I program in the state's largest city outside Lincoln, Omaha has built an identity around a scrappy, blue-collar climb up college basketball's ranks. The Mavs compete in the Summit League, a league built for programs punching above their historical weight. After decades in Division II, Omaha has embraced its underdog status as it works to establish itself among the sport's mid-major upstarts.
The University of Nebraska Omaha traces its roots to 1908, and its basketball program built a strong Division II résumé, winning North Central Conference regular-season titles in 1979, 1984, 2004, and 2005 and reaching the D-II tournament a dozen times. Omaha reclassified to Division I starting with the 2011-12 season and joined the Summit League. The program's landmark moment came in 2025, when the Mavericks won the Summit League tournament to claim the first NCAA Division I Tournament berth in school history, falling to St. John's in the first round.
