Appalachian State Mountaineers

The Appalachian State Mountaineers bring mountain-town grit to Sun Belt basketball, playing their home games at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, North Carolina. Tucked in the Blue Ridge Mountains, App State has built a reputation as a scrappy, well-coached program that punches above its enrollment. The black-and-gold faithful pack the arena for a program that has learned to win conference titles even when the national tournament spotlight is rare.

Appalachian State basketball dates back to 1928 and spent decades in the Southern Conference before joining the Sun Belt in 2014. Bobby Cremins built the program into a SoCon power in the late 1970s, capturing three straight regular-season titles and a conference tournament crown in 1979 that sent the Mountaineers to their first NCAA Tournament. Buzz Peterson returned the program to the Big Dance in 2000, and in 2021 App State won the Sun Belt Tournament for a third NCAA berth. The program has never advanced past the tournament's opening round, but its conference championship pedigree runs deep.
