The Texas A&M-Commerce Lions bring nearly a century of winning basketball tradition to Northeast Texas, playing home games at The Field House in Commerce. Now a Division I member of the Southland Conference, the Lions carry one of the deepest small-school basketball histories in Texas, including a national championship banner from their Lone Star Conference days. The program's identity is built on that long legacy of consistent winning, not just its recent jump to Division I.
The Lions (then East Texas State) joined the Lone Star Conference in 1931 and won their first conference title in 1934. Under coach Bob Rogers in the mid-1950s, the Lions won three straight conference championships and captured the 1955 NAIA National Championship, defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State 71-54. Over nearly a century in the Lone Star Conference, the program amassed almost 1,300 wins and 20 conference titles before accepting an invitation to the Southland Conference and NCAA Division I, debuting in 2022-23.
