The North Dakota Fighting Hawks play home games at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, representing a program with deep basketball roots on the northern plains. Now a member of the Summit League after years in the Big Sky, North Dakota has counted an NBA legend among its alumni and continues to build toward postseason relevance at the Division I level.
The University of North Dakota was chartered in 1883 and fielded its first basketball team in 1904. Future NBA Hall of Famer Phil Jackson played for the Fighting Hawks (then Sioux) from 1964 to 1967 under coach Bill Fitch. North Dakota won the Big Sky regular-season and tournament titles in 2017, earning its first NCAA Division I Tournament berth as a 15-seed against Arizona. The program moved to the Summit League in 2018 and has not won an NCAA Division I championship.
