The Iowa Hawkeyes bring big-arena energy to Iowa City, where Carver-Hawkeye Arena's raised-floor bowl creates one of the loudest home-court advantages in the Big Ten. Iowa basketball has long been defined by up-tempo, high-scoring play and passionate black-and-gold crowds that treat every conference game like a rivalry game. The program has produced NBA talent and Big Ten titles across generations of coaches. It's a proud, blue-collar basketball culture in a football-first conference.
Iowa basketball dates back to the early 1900s and has been a charter-era presence in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes' high-water mark came under coach Bucky O'Connor, who led back-to-back Final Four runs in 1955 and 1956, falling to Bill Russell's San Francisco team in the 1956 title game. Lute Olson later guided Iowa to another Final Four in 1980 before departing for Arizona. Despite eight Big Ten regular-season titles and numerous NCAA Tournament appearances, Iowa has never won a national championship.
