Michigan State Spartans

The Michigan State Spartans play at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, home to one of the most consistently excellent programs in modern college basketball. Under longtime coach Tom Izzo, Michigan State has become a March Madness fixture, famous for physical, rebounding-driven basketball and an uncanny knack for deep tournament runs regardless of seed. Green-and-white crowds expect a Final Four appearance most years, a standard Izzo has largely delivered since the late 1990s.

Michigan State's first national title came in 1979, when Magic Johnson led the Spartans past Larry Bird's undefeated Indiana State team in one of the most-watched championship games ever played. Tom Izzo delivered the program's second title in 2000, beating Florida behind tournament MVP Mateen Cleaves. Izzo has since taken the Spartans to the Final Four numerous times, making Michigan State one of the sport's most consistent tournament powers of the last quarter-century.
