The Delaware Blue Hens are one of the most decorated programs in FCS history, playing Coastal Athletic Association football out of Newark, Delaware. Steeped in tradition and known for a run of legendary head coaches, Delaware has built a reputation as a national power at the lower divisions with a fan base that expects championship contention every fall. The Blue Hens' winged helmets and old-school ground game are instantly recognizable across FCS football, and the program remains a perennial CAA and national playoff threat.
Delaware first played football in 1889 and became a national power under coaches Bill Murray, David Nelson, and especially Harold 'Tubby' Raymond, who won 300 games over 36 seasons. The Blue Hens have claimed six national titles across various eras and classifications — 1946, 1963, 1971, 1972, 1979, and a Division I-AA national championship in 2003 — along with additional runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2010. Delaware remains one of the CAA's flagship programs and among the winningest in college football history.
