The UTEP Miners play Conference USA football out of the historic Sun Bowl stadium in El Paso, Texas, one of college football's most scenic venues nestled against the Franklin Mountains. With a long, winding conference history spanning the Border Conference, WAC, and Conference USA, UTEP has carved out an identity as a resilient program in one of the country's most isolated FBS markets. The Miners are set for another chapter as they prepare to join the Mountain West Conference.
UTEP, then known as the State College of Mines and Metallurgy, fielded its first football team in 1914. The Miners won the Border Conference championship in 1956 and later shared the Western Athletic Conference title with TCU in 2000. UTEP left the WAC for Conference USA in 2005 and has accepted an invitation to join the Mountain West Conference beginning in 2026, continuing a long history of conference realignment.
