Norfolk State Spartans football represents the FCS program at Norfolk State University, calling William 'Dick' Price Stadium home in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Spartans built their reputation through the 1970s and 80s as a CIAA power before transitioning into Division I-AA/FCS play in 1997. Norfolk State's championship history and place in Virginia's HBCU football corridor give the program a long-standing, rivalry-rich profile.
Norfolk State fielded football teams as an independent before joining the CIAA in 1962. Under coach Dick Price the Spartans won three straight CIAA titles from 1974 to 1976, and Willard Bailey delivered another CIAA crown in 1984 with a school-record 11 wins. Norfolk State moved to Division I-AA (now FCS) in 1997 and has since won MEAC championships. The Spartans have made one FCS playoff appearance in program history.
