Morgan State Bears football is one of the winningest programs in HBCU history, built on Hall of Fame coach Eddie Hurt's mid-century CIAA dynasty. Playing out of Baltimore in the MEAC, the Bears have claimed seven Black college national championships and a program-record 23 conference titles. Morgan State's gridiron tradition runs alongside a legacy of producing pro talent that helped reshape the sport.
Morgan State began playing football in 1898, just over three decades after the university's founding. Coach Eddie Hurt won 14 CIAA championships between 1929 and 1959, and successor Earl Banks added four more CIAA titles in the 1960s before Morgan State entered the MEAC in 1971. Since then, the Bears have won MEAC championships in 1976, 1979 and 2014, part of a program total of 23 conference titles and seven Black college national championships.
