Delaware State Hornets football represents the First State's flagship HBCU program, competing in the MEAC out of Dover. Under longtime coach Bill Collick the Hornets built the winningest stretch in program history, headlined by five MEAC championships during his tenure. Delaware State's tradition has carried the program from the CIAA through decades of MEAC competition.
Delaware State fielded its first documented varsity season in 1924 and joined the CIAA in 1945, sharing a conference title in 1956. The Hornets moved to the MEAC in 1971 and have since won six conference championships (1978, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2004, 2007), five of them under coach Bill Collick. The 2007 title season produced a school-record 10 wins and the program's first-ever playoff appearance.
