The Indiana State Sycamores play FCS football in the Missouri Valley Football Conference out of Terre Haute, one of the longest-running programs in the sport, dating to 1896. While championships have been rare for Indiana State football, the program's 1983 run to the second round of the FCS playoffs remains a high point. The Sycamores bring a scrappy identity to one of the toughest leagues at their level.
Indiana State began playing football in 1896 and cycled through several regional conferences before winning its lone conference championship in 1964, a share of the Indiana Collegiate Conference title. The Sycamores moved to Division I-AA (now FCS) in 1982 and later joined the Missouri Valley Football Conference lineage. Their best postseason run came in 1983, when coach Dennis Raetz led the team to the second round of the FCS playoffs.
