The Wagner Seahawks represent Wagner College on Staten Island, competing in the FCS-level Northeast Conference. A small private school with a modest athletics budget, Wagner has nonetheless built a durable, respected FCS program with genuine championship pedigree at its level. Green and white, the Seahawks lean on New York City-area recruiting and a scrappy, overlooked identity befitting a small college competing in the shadow of the city's bigger sports scene.
Wagner fielded its first football team in 1927. The program's breakthrough came in 1983 under coach Walt Hameline, who led Wagner to its first-ever championship, and Hameline later added a Northeast Conference title in 2012 during a coaching career that spanned decades and multiple conference eras. The Seahawks continue to compete in the Northeast Conference as one of the region's longer-standing FCS programs.
