Eastern Illinois football dates back to 1899, competing as an independent before joining the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1912. The program's signature moment came in 1978, when coach Darrell Mudra led a team that had gone 1-11 the year before to the NCAA Division II national championship, beating Delaware 10-9. EIU transitioned to Division I FCS in 1981 and joined the Ohio Valley Conference in 1996, where it has won multiple league titles.
