The Murray State Racers bring blue-collar, run-heavy football to western Kentucky, representing a program with deep Ohio Valley Conference roots. Racers football has always prided itself on physical, fundamentals-first play and a fiercely loyal regional fan base. Though the school shifted its broader athletics home to the Missouri Valley Conference, the football program has stayed grounded in OVC/MVFC competition. It's a program defined by resilience and a knack for producing standout individual talent even in the shadow of bigger neighbors.
Murray State first fielded a football team in 1924, opening with a scoreless tie against Union University. The Racers became a founding member of the Ohio Valley Conference in 1948 and quickly established themselves as a league power, winning eight OVC championships between 1948 and 2002, including back-to-back titles under coach Fred Faurot in 1950 and 1951. The program remained an OVC mainstay for decades before the school's move to the Missouri Valley Conference prompted a shift of football to the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2023. Murray State's history is one of consistent regional competitiveness across nearly a century of play.
