The Washington State Cougars play in Pullman, one of college football's most remote and passionate settings, at Martin Stadium in the Palouse. Coug football has a history of scrappy, pass-happy offenses, most notably under Mike Leach's Air Raid system in the 2010s. Despite operating with fewer resources than many peers, Washington State has produced multiple ranked seasons and Rose Bowl appearances. The Cougars remain a proud, independent-minded program navigating a changing Pac-12 landscape.
Washington State football began as an independent in 1894 before joining the newly formed Pacific Coast Conference in 1917. The Cougars have won four conference championships, three outright (1917, 1918, 1920) and one shared with Oregon State (1921). Washington State has played in four Rose Bowls, winning its only appearance in 1916 against Brown. The program has weathered major conference realignment in recent years, continuing on as a Pac-12 member while much of its former conference departed for other leagues.
