Furman Paladins

The Furman Paladins carry the banner for one of the Southern Conference's most tradition-rich programs. Based in Greenville, South Carolina, Furman has built a reputation as an FCS heavyweight, blending disciplined defense with explosive offensive stretches that have made it a perennial conference contender. The Paladins' purple and white are synonymous with SoCon football excellence, and Paladin Stadium has hosted some of the league's biggest games. Furman fans expect their team to compete for championships every fall.

Furman fielded its first football team in 1889, playing in South Carolina's first-ever intercollegiate football game against Wofford. The program's crowning achievement came in 1988, when the Paladins won the NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) national championship under coach Jimmy Satterfield, defeating Georgia Southern 17-12. Furman has claimed 15 Southern Conference championships over the decades, including a run of consecutive titles from 1980-1983 and a more recent crown in 2023. The program has produced numerous NFL talents and remains one of the SoCon's flagship brands.
