The Texas Southern Tigers represent one of Houston's historic HBCU programs in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. With deep roots in Black college football tradition, the Tigers bring a proud band-and-football culture to every home game, wearing maroon and gray as they compete in one of the sport's most storied conferences.
Texas Southern's football program dates to 1947 and joined the SWAC as a full member in 1955. The Tigers have shared several SWAC titles over the decades, including 1956, 1966, and 1968, and won additional conference championships between 2000 and 2013 under coach Bob Hopkins and his successors. Note that the program was later forced to vacate wins from 2006-2010, including a 2010 SWAC championship, due to NCAA violations. Texas Southern remains a fixture of HBCU football in the SWAC.
