Southern Jaguars

The Southern Jaguars are one of the crown jewels of HBCU football, playing home games at A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Backed by the legendary Human Jukebox marching band and a fiercely loyal fan base, the Jaguars have long stood among the SWAC's most successful and celebrated programs, decked out in blue and gold.

Southern began playing collegiate football in 1916 and joined the SWAC in 1934. The Jaguars have won 19 SWAC championships, 12 outright and 7 shared, including titles in 1937, 1938, 1940, and a dominant late-1940s stretch that saw Southern go 32-0-2 from 1948-1950, capped by a 30-0 win over San Francisco State in the 1948 Fruit Bowl -- the first integrated HBCU postseason game. More recent SWAC titles came in 1993, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2003, and 2013, cementing Southern's place among HBCU football's most decorated programs.
