Jackson State Tigers

The Jackson State Tigers are one of the marquee programs in Black college football, a SWAC powerhouse whose blue-and-white colors have flown over decades of championship Saturdays in Jackson, Mississippi. Playing under the JSU banner, the Tigers combine a deep talent pipeline with one of the loudest bands and fan bases in the conference. Jackson State's football identity is built on defense, discipline, and a coaching lineage that has produced NFL talent for generations. Few HBCU programs carry as much national name recognition.

Jackson State football traces back to 1911 and became a SWAC powerhouse after joining the conference in 1958. The program's golden era came in the 1980s under head coach W.C. Gorden, who won eight conference titles between 1980 and 1990, including four straight from 1985-1988. Jackson State has claimed multiple Black college national championships across its history, with its most recent coming in 2024 under an 11-2 season capped by a Celebration Bowl win. The Tigers briefly captured the national spotlight in 2021-2022 when Deion Sanders served as head coach.
