The UL Monroe Warhawks play Sun Belt football at Malone Stadium, a program with a scrappy underdog identity built on shocking bigger-budget opponents. Maroon and gold Warhawks teams (known as the Indians until 2006) carry a national championship pedigree from their Division I-AA days. UL Monroe has long been considered one of the toughest Group of Five programs to prepare for on a short week. The Warhawks remain a competitive if under-the-radar Sun Belt West program.
Football at what's now UL Monroe dates to 1931, and the program joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2001 after competing independently and in the Southland Conference. As the Northeast Louisiana Indians, the program won the 1987 NCAA Division I-AA national championship behind All-American quarterback Stan Humphries. The Warhawks (renamed in 2006) have won five conference titles overall, most recently a shared 2005 Sun Belt West championship.
