The South Alabama Jaguars play Sun Belt football at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, one of the newer programs in FBS football having started play in 2009. Red, white, and blue Jaguars teams built quick credibility with back-to-back conference championships in their first years of full membership. South Alabama's rapid rise from a startup program to Sun Belt title contender is one of the more notable expansion stories in the sport. The Jaguars are the only program that's remained a Sun Belt member continuously since the league's founding across all sports.
South Alabama's football program began play in 2009 and reached full FBS status in the Sun Belt Conference for the 2013-14 season. The Jaguars won their first Sun Belt football championship in 2012, a 30-8 win over Arkansas State, and captured a second title in 2014 with a 34-27 win over Appalachian State. South Alabama has built a reputation as one of the Sun Belt's most well-rounded athletic programs overall.
