The Troy Trojans bring small-town Alabama grit to the Sun Belt, a program that has punched well above its enrollment for decades. Playing out of Troy, the Trojans have built a reputation as a perennial giant-killer, regularly knocking off Power Conference opponents on the road. Their brand of fast, physical football and a loyal Troy community have made them one of the Sun Belt's most respected names.
Troy fielded football as early as 1909 and built continuous tradition from 1946 onward. The program won a national championship at three different classification levels: the 1968 NAIA title, and back-to-back NCAA Division II crowns in 1984 and 1987. Troy climbed from NAIA to Division II in 1970, to I-AA in 1993, and finally into the FBS ranks in 2001, a rapid rise that culminated in Sun Belt membership and a string of upset wins over SEC and Big Ten opponents in the 2010s.
