The Michigan Wolverines are one of the most storied programs in college football, playing before more than 100,000 fans at 'The Big House' -- Michigan Stadium, the largest stadium in the Western Hemisphere -- in Ann Arbor. Winners of more games than any program in NCAA history, the Wolverines carry an identity built on tradition, the winged helmet, and sustained excellence across more than a century of Big Ten football.
Michigan began playing intercollegiate football in 1879 and joined the Big Ten at its founding in 1896. Under legendary coach Fielding Yost, the Wolverines won four consecutive national titles from 1901-1904, part of a broader championship tradition that includes titles in 1918, 1923, 1932, 1933, 1947, and 1948. After decades without an undisputed title, Michigan won a fully consensus national championship in 1997, and returned to the top of the sport with the 2023 national championship.
