Fluminense FC

Fluminense FC is one of Rio de Janeiro's grand old clubs, known across Brazil for its maroon, green and white stripes and a self-styled reputation for elegant, technical football. Nicknamed "Flu" and "Tricolor," the club calls the iconic Maracanã home, sharing the world-famous stadium with cross-town rival Flamengo. Fluminense's identity leans on tradition and pedigree as much as trophies, tracing its roots to the earliest days of organized football in Brazil. In 2023 the club reached a new competitive peak by lifting the Copa Libertadores for the first time, cementing its status among South America's continental champions.

Founded on July 21, 1902 in the Laranjeiras neighborhood by Oscar Cox, Fluminense is credited as one of the pioneering clubs of Brazilian football and even introduced the sport to several other Rio institutions. The club won its first Campeonato Brasileiro in 1970 and added further national titles in 1984, 2010 and 2012, with playmaker Darío Conca central to the 2010 triumph. For decades Fluminense was best known domestically and regionally, dominating Rio's Campeonato Carioca on multiple occasions. The 2023 Copa Libertadores title, secured under manager Fernando Diniz with a win over Boca Juniors, marked the club's first continental crown and its most significant achievement in the modern era.
