Austria's national team carries the legacy of the legendary 'Wunderteam' of the 1930s, one of the most dominant sides of its era. The modern program has rebuilt around a talented generation to return to major tournaments after a long absence. The ÖFB was founded in 1904. Under coach Hugo Meisl, Austria's 'Wunderteam' went unbeaten for 16 matches in the early 1930s and finished fourth at the 1934 World Cup. The program's best World Cup finish came in 1954, a third-place result, though its history was interrupted by Austria's forced absorption into Germany's squad following the 1938 Anschluss. After missing several tournaments, Austria has re-emerged as a regular Euro and World Cup qualifier in recent years.
