Iran, Team Melli, are perennial kings of Asian qualifying, combining defensive solidity, physical strength, and passionate national pride. One of the AFC's most consistent and highly ranked sides, Iran have repeatedly reached the World Cup but are still chasing a breakthrough on the global stage.

Iran have qualified for six World Cups but have never advanced beyond the group stage. Their most celebrated moment came in 1998, a politically charged 2-1 victory over the United States in Lyon that resonated far beyond football. They came agonizingly close to the knockouts in 2018 after a spirited campaign, and beat Wales in 2022. Consistently strong yet still seeking a first knockout appearance, Iran return to the World Cup in 2026.
