Algeria's Desert Foxes are one of North Africa's proudest football powers, a team whose identity is inseparable from the country's history of independence and resilience. The Algerian national team traces back to the Équipe FLN, formed in 1958 by independence fighters as a symbol of the fight against French colonial rule. After independence, the Algerian Football Federation was founded in 1962 and Algeria joined FIFA in 1964. The Desert Foxes won the Africa Cup of Nations as hosts in 1990, then again in 2019 in Egypt, conceding just one goal across the entire tournament. Algeria has also reached three FIFA World Cups, highlighted by a famous 1982 upset of West Germany.
