Slovakia announced itself on the world stage barely a decade after independence with one of hockey's great underdog stories. The Slovak Ice Hockey Federation was established in 1993, shortly after Czechoslovakia's dissolution, and Slovakia joined the IIHF that same year. Just nine years later, Slovakia stunned the hockey world by winning the 2002 IIHF World Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden, beating Russia in a dramatic overtime final. Stars of that golden generation, including Zdeno Chára, Marián Hossa, and Peter Bondra, went on to become some of the era's top NHL players. Slovakia has remained a competitive top-division nation ever since.
